Best of the year?

It's that time of the year when we get all retrospective. Best NZ ads of the
year? What's going to get up at AXIS and beyond? Be charitable. And refrain
from nominating your own if possible.

That documentary film festival ad with the wailing woman. Funniest ad i've seen all year.

you should watch more ads.

That film festival idea has only been done a million times before.

Old news.

I quite like the world press photo spools of film - although it'll probably only get something for animation or cinematography or something. Also, the car ad for LTSA is lead contender for Grande Axis TV in my books.

PS/. This isn't written by someone at Clems either. I'm at a big dirty Auckland agency.

that auckland film festival stuff has been done so many times. It's like an idea that was fresh im 1984.

Speaking of dodgy: The new Auck City Mission tv spot is a rip off of a BBDO Manila ad (which was done either last year or the year before).

Shouldn't that be classed under some other 'Best of'?

I love those Farmers Red Spots.

So much better than green, or even blue ones.

I like the magnents in the magazine.
Wicked idea.
Heard a rumour the Car ad was wrong for clems.
They didn't even get the stats right that's a shame.
Good idea.
What about the new insurance ad that's nice, the one "when your 16 sucess is ...."
Bit of a laugh, nicely done probally won't win an award but I like it.

I like it too, but it's ripped off an email forward that was being sent around about a year ago. It's almost word for word only they've cut some years out to make it fit. I still like it, but I would have liked it more if it were original.

Here - I've just found the original:

Measuring Success

At age 4 success is . . . not messing in your pants.

At age 12 success is . . . having friends.

At age 16 success is . . . having a drivers license.

At age 20 success is . . . having sex.

At age 35 success is . . . having money.

At age 50 success is . . . having money.

At age 60 success is . . . having sex.

At age 70 success is . . . having a drivers license.

At age 75 success is . . . having friends.

At age 90 success is . . . not messing in your pants.

Oh what!!!
I hate it now un-original pricks.
There hasn't been any good local TV ads has there? The last good one was L&P.
The Cathay Pacific Italian film festival print ads are good see bestadsontv print section.

I still like those magnents that must be an Axis for print.

Um, are you serious? That italian film festival stuff has been done many times before. I very much doubt that McCann would even score a finalist off it. Check out The New York Festival annual volume 12 or even that 'Eating media lunch' poster from earlier this year.
PS/. What are 'magnents'?

Jeneal's thing for the dating thing.
Can't remember the client was it exclusive dating or something.
Cathay-won't win an Axis no, but they are quite cool.

2:55 pm NZDT

Anonymous Anonymous said...

How can you think they're cool? I don't understand. They're just average, everyday, run of the mill ads. They look like they're from one of those student books where you say "that's alright," just so you can say at least one good thing about their book. Hang on, you're not...

9:31 pm NZDT

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed. Very run of the mill.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the idea behind the PS2 bus shelter thing that's currently on bestads?

Am I missing something? And if I'm missing something, do you not think that maybe Joe public would too?

What's a magnent? Is it an art director's magnet?

Gotta give ups to Steve O's dark McDonald's/PS2 jobbie. Even if it's just cos it's so not McDonalds.
WORST: I actually have to change channels at the sight of Telecoms T3G ad with the kid in the dentist chair. That goes for any ad with a "Cute child of the future" explaining anything techinogical, what's next - backwards 'S's.

5:43 pm NZDT

Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Mcdonald's ad is shit. It is not very Mcdonalds but that doesn't make up for the fact it's still crap, I don't like it.
Isn't that PS2 thing...if it's the one I'm thinking of made up with bubble wrap in the sign of the PS2 symbols, it's about fun.
I also think there has been no good ads lately. The new DB Gold is...terrible.

This post is titled "Best of the year" and you put down Steve's macca's ad? Jesus, even Steve would be embarrassed you said that.

Yeah, exportgold is as shite as they come. Mind you, it might have looked better on paper. It's a shame to see such a big budget get wasted.

when you say 'on paper' i hope you're not referring to the billboards.
