Toyota RAV4
The whole family laughed out loud. Bloody good.
The print is nice as well.

Gold. Funniest Toyota ad since Bugger.
9:56 am NZDT
I laughed.
10:35 am NZDT
For those of us that haven't seen it....

10:45 am NZDT
Shame there weren't any aquasplashes on it though.
11:16 am NZDT
I thought it was an ad in the 'Spray and wipe' campaign. Seriously... if you change the music over to the 'so thank... spray and wipe' music you could totally use it. Not sure that it should be classified in the same sentence as Bugger. Or the far superior Yaris spot that Saatchis recently did.
1:12 pm NZDT
Yeah, I wish I had made this ad too...
1:39 pm NZDT
Bugger it is not
1:39 pm NZDT
I never laughed at bugger, but this made me laugh.
2:02 pm NZDT
Yeah I wished I'd though of sticking yet another crappy 60s tune onto a feature-length TV sitcom reject.
2:07 pm NZDT
It didn't make sense to me when I saw it on TV. I'm not being bitchy I'm being honest. There were no visual cues to me that said that it was a couple trying to kill each other over the car. I just thought a whole load of accidents were happening... I had to read the blog intro on campaignbrief just before so that it made sense to me.
2:11 pm NZDT
Yep funny....about time someone did a decent ad in this country that might win an award overseas. Good production. Good track. Made me laugh. Should do OK.
The idea/stra path is a little done though. (bugger not) It seamed a bit simliar to the ad with the two guys wanting to park the passat and there ends up been a lot of lugage in the back of the car so he has to walk it back to hotel. They also fight to see who gets the car. Also not a bad thought.
Seen other similar creative paths as well (the down fore of reading to many award annuals, archives and so on).
What made bugger good was it got into the heart of what life on the farm is like and used those little things well, so every rural related person understood it and made them feel like it was their ad. Forexample: Using a vechile to pull a cow out of the mud ( you usually use a trator which is more powerful than a ute- so the power SMP works well here) It seamed like it was created on the farm or by someone with a farming background. resulting in funny, strong creative that also worked extremely well.
Still RVA4 is a goody for the TV. I think it well done and will work well. Congrads to saatchi's on a job well done.

There are three creatives on the ad. Crazy.
2:42 pm NZDT
It took three people to create this rubbish? Crazy.
3:09 pm NZDT
Here we go again someone did an ad that stands out from all the other clutter on TV. Lets we see how fast it can be ripped apart.
Personally I think we should be discussing how in the fuck an ad where a couple trying to kill each other got sold to a global client like Toyota. It takes a brave client with a lot of trust to let their agencies run with an idea like this. Congratulations to Saatchi for delivering. Clear your shelves your going to need some room.
3:26 pm NZDT
What was the car again?
3:35 pm NZDT
It's a cool ad.
It's not gonna require shelf-room to be cleared though.
And it's you're not your.
3:35 pm NZDT
I couldn't create three people from that. Crazy.
3:44 pm NZDT
I can't stop touching myself everytime that chick gets hit with the bowling ball.
How much better would it be if it was a piece of 2x4 pine. Solid, you know. I love chicks getting bashed in the head.
Make me touch.
3:45 pm NZDT
Yeah three people to write an ad is ridiculous. Why doesn't someone stand up and do something. This is crazy - those bastards must be mad lazy or something.
And it's crap, I mean you don't see three people doing a crap do you? Except maybe in Mpegs on the information superhighway. I've seen three people doing a crap in an Mpeg. Actually come to think of it I've seen three people doing something else in an Mpeg. One of them was kissing the front end of a gaot too.
Actually compared to that Mpeg it's bloody genius. But compared that Mpeg where a guy jumps across the pool and smacks his nuts I'd say it's a five out ten.
Have you seen that Mpeg where a midget is receiving a blow job from a hooker? Yeah, too funny. Rav 4 so doean't even come close to that.
Although I did see a shit Mpeg of a dog licking his balls. It beats that for sure. I think it does anyway.
What was this all about? Yeah Three fucking dirty creatives. They're probably all fiddling with each other now. Maybe we'll see the Mpeg soon.
3:53 pm NZDT
Imagine hitting Webster on the head with a bowling ball.
That would of Made Rav heaps funnier.
3:59 pm NZDT
I don't know why everyone is creaming themselves over this. It looks like a mildly commended to me.
4:43 pm NZDT
Yeah, agreed. Good but not great.
4:50 pm NZDT
Is it supposed to appeal to NZers? Has a very american look to it.
5:01 pm NZDT
Certainly nothing to Rav about.
5:03 pm NZDT
Amazing how much hot air one average car commercial can create.
5:27 pm NZDT
Re: dude who wrote the above comment.
I saw it twice and once with a bunch of mates. They didn't get it either. I knew it was something about a car but what I didn't get AT ALL was the fact that they were trying to kill each other. It's been really badly edited together. I thought (and all my mates thought) that it was a series of accidents happenning to both of them. There is nothing in the ad that gives the consumer clues that they are plotting against each other. I think a re-edit is needed to make it make sense.
5:28 pm NZDT
Agree with the American comment. I thought it was an overseas ad that was imported in. Not very NZ at all. Probably'll do well at AWARD tho'.
5:40 pm NZDT
What exactly would you say in the ad is American?
11:09 pm NZDT
The whole thing has an American feel. It's like condensing 'The War of the Roses', the 1989 movie with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. They try to kill each other in similar ways. Probably Jay and Andy saw it when they were teenagers back in New York.
11:40 pm NZDT
Agree about edit, think idea comes across but it's not totally clear for a while that they're plotting. American feel - maybe coming off 'Mr and Mrs Smith'.
Like it tho, made me laugh.
8:48 am NZDT
Why it looks American...
Ok, the house looks American - no kiwi couple could afford a house that large, and if they could they would certainly not be that young, or decorate it in such a hideous fashion.
Only an American woman would wear that horrendous outfit. Only an American would have a ten pin bowling ball at home.
In fact, I'm struggling to find a single thing in the ad apart from the street in the end scene that looks remotely kiwi.
8:57 am NZDT
I think it looks slightly Czechoslovakian with just a hint of Japanese.
But that's just me
9:59 am NZDT
I think it looks really nice, but yeah it doesn't have an 'everyday people' good ol' Toyota NZ feel to it. And that is what I thought the whole brand strategy of NZ Toyota was. It's certainly not another Yaris. Go the Yaris, that ad is great!
10:17 am NZDT
You may not get it the first time, but you'd be an absolute tard not to get it the second time. And probably not smart enough to afford a new car. I like the fact there's a lot to take in, meaning you won't get bored so quickly after seeing in on TV 100 times.
They could have made it more car ad like for some of these bloggers. How about different shots of the target buyer driving through different parts of the country. A city shot, a country shot and definitely a going to the beach shot. They should be shown to be enjoying the car and singing something like... say.... 'What a wonderful world'. Yea, that's a Toyota song.
Fuck I'm good, I gotta get a job in advertising.
10:59 am NZDT
I think it's more Canadian than American.
11:17 am NZDT
Yeah, look all I'm saying is that I didn't get it with the way it was presented to me. I haven't been nasty about this ad like some other people on this site, I've just said what I think. I'm allowed to have an opinion and considering I'm an ad geek, if I didn't get it then I think there might be a fair few other people (i.e. consumers) that'll be thinking the same as me. It's just one person's POV, you don't have to agree with me but you don't have to call me a 'tard either.
11:32 am NZDT
Funny.
11:38 am NZDT
Geek.
11:39 am NZDT
sweet jesus there are a lot of small minded petty pricks on this blog. This is a great ad, bold, entertaining and funny. For toyota to buy it is pretty fucking amazing. agreed, it looks a bit american but that's because slapstick, comedy violence is a trademark of american movies (and ads - fox sports etc). this is a fucking world class ad and anyone who is bitching about the edit etc is either jealous or stupid. It's about time the TV in New zealand improved instead of one half decent ad a year that wins axis gold but does fuck all anywhere else. nice work saatchis.
11:47 am NZDT
I wasn't necessarily talking about you. And don't ever put a ' in front of tard again. Slang is slang, and should never ever be used in the presence of correct punctuation. But seriously, if you saw it twice and still didn't get it you really are a tard. My wife got it, and I can tell you, I definitely married her for her looks over anything else.
11:47 am NZDT
I married my wife because she's a squirter.
11:59 am NZDT
I slept with her for the exact same reason
12:20 pm NZDT
I was wondering why my kid was a Ginga.
12:27 pm NZDT
I've had two of 'em.
12:45 pm NZDT
squirters or gingas? be proud either way mate
12:47 pm NZDT
Or was it a squirting ginga?
12:57 pm NZDT
Are Gingas the new black?
12:59 pm NZDT
No, they're the new Friday.
1:00 pm NZDT
Gingas are a genetic mutation.
1:03 pm NZDT
Now there's a ginga in the wood pile.
1:06 pm NZDT
Good to see that prejudice and hatred can still flourish and that the protection of political correctness hasn't yet been afforded to that particular sub-group.
1:09 pm NZDT
Remember that ad for rum that had a black female teacher reeling back in disgust because a ginga had touched her? Is there any group of people left on the planet that you could treat in that way and get away with it?
1:14 pm NZDT
Why are gingas over-represented in TV advertising? In particular kids. Keep an eye out for ginga kids in ads next time you sit down in front of the box. Anyone would think NZ is half ging.
1:21 pm NZDT
def 'war of the roses', and 'mr and mr smith', but also there's a kids book (sad that I know), called 'two of everything', where the parents hate each other so much they demolish everything until the kids say 'enough' and seperate the parents. Come to think of it we should seperate the blogs into the old people and the kids.
1:39 pm NZDT
11:47am - I'm so glad I don't work in the same ad agency as you, you sound like a complete cockmunch.
1:41 pm NZDT
1.41- I'm sure you much a lot of cock yourself, and Im glad I don't work with you at ogilvy too.
1:52 pm NZDT
Whoever wrote that crap about the kids book is the tardiest of tards. Do you cry yourself to sleep at night? You are destined to a mediocre life I'm happy to say.
2:15 pm NZDT
1:52 - sorry Mr. Smith employee.
2:28 pm NZDT
Jeeeeezus. 63 comments on this and some really long, considered ones. This may be a new nzcc record. Better have a look at the ad. Been getting pissed at Prego all afternoon.

Fuck me, I must have seen that ad dozens of times and I still laugh. It must be good. That bit where he spits out the tooth at the bottom of the stairs. Nice touch. (That's 66.)
