The NAB. Why? Part 2

Once again the NAB has awarded an ad which ran in one of its member publications the highly prized title of "NAB Ad of the Month".

Nothing wrong with this ad for Nokia from Y&R.

Just something wrong with the NAB scheme. Only ads from their rags are eligible. That excludes some metro Sundays like the StarTimes for example. NAB staffers choose the entries by ripping what they consider to be good. The unlucky judges who heed the call get to spend half an hour going..."what the fuck?!" until they can eventually decide on something that they can justify putting their names to.

Up until recently the winner used to get entry into the Axis Awards. Since someone mentioned this was perhaps pretty crap as a prize, they've upped it to:

:the winning team from Generator/Y&R will receive 2 x $200 Ticketek vouchers to see a show or concert of their choice. The ad will appear in the “What’s New” section of March AdMedia.
The overall “winner-of-winners” for Round 1 is to be announced very soon. Round 2 will be launched in the next few weeks and promises to be a ‘bigger and better’ newspaper creativity awards, to rival the other media creativity competitions.
For further information and the full terms and conditions, please visit
www.nabs.co.nz"

Well let's hope you do properly, this time NAB. Like once upon a time when the NABs were real heavy bronze gongs that meant something to the winners. let's hope you do make it a real awards scheme and are brave enough to have people enter from outside your cartel.

Bring on the NZ Caxtons....

I've held off all day, but I can't any longer. THIS AD IS SHIT. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that it came from Y&Arse

It's certainly no D&AD silver nomination but to say that this ad IS SHIT is a bit fuckin harsh mate. I don't even come from the aforementioned agency but I think that it's clean and does the job which is at least a B in my book. Plus, the model's hot.

Discuss opinions is one thing but to sledge without constructive criticism is another.

10.14 This is that open forum. We don't edit - unless legal advice says otherwise - and you can post whatever - to the front page by email, or to comments, anonymously, by pseuedonym or even using your actual real name. It won't get any more open than this. Unless you've got a better idea. Love to hear it.

Listen this is all a bit ridiculous. I was one of the judges for this month and this ad was clearly the best of the bunch. Of all the pap that we are collectively responsible for creating there were only 3 or 4 ads worth looking at. Sky Movies 'dumb and dumberer' execution for rialto channel was one of them. It came close but the feeling was it just had too much copy on it. But it was okay. A Toyota yaris sponsorship ad for the sevens that you could fold into a flag was also a contender - it used the medium in an interactive way and all that, but it felt a bit flat. It was also just okay. Y&Rs 'disasters don't discriminate' for red cross was there too. Nobody really felt the line was right for the campaign so it got chucked back in the others pile.

Everything else WAS shit.

If you reckon you've done something better in one of NABs titles why don't you post it here and lets see if anyone agrees with you?

THe nokia ad on the other hand was clean, it had an idea, it was well shot and crafted nicely. It was also part of a campaign that I understand was selected for inclusion Archive... so it can't be that bad. The job was to pick the best ad of the month (not the year, not the world) and this was it. End of fucking story on that bit.

As for these awards the NAB monthly comp has been going for ages. It's not pretending to be anything it's not, just a way of incentivising creatives to do something better with press advertising. LOOK do the same thing with a best-of-the-bunch for creative that have appeared on THEIR billboards (it excludes OGGI etc's sites ) so it's not the only exclusive comp out there.

The NAB is looking for feedback on how to make the comp better so rather than being a sad miserable blogging fuck why don't you give the organizer a call and have a chat to her. Her name is Lexie Ribot and she is the NAB creative manager. She is a great girl and would really appreciate your thoughts if you have the balls to stand behind your cynical comments. THe number for NAB is 09 361 2710.

I agree with Josh. The other comments are clearly from small minded people whose big egos prevent them from recognising good ideas from others. You know what, the problem with our industry is that it is full of jealous people - including the comment from the prick who said "this ad is shit".

Josh! That's a bloody cheek, What about my ad I placed in the classifieds, "Nissan Bluebird 1996, new WOF & REG. 2 owners call 027 3235370 after 8pm" How could that be placed in the 'others pile'. To be honest mate, I question your, Jamie, Dave and Tonster's judgement.
