Don't you love it when great minds think alike?

Just having a quick flick through Blood magazine and noticed an ad for Mizuno Golf equipment. Looks very similar to this campaign from Downtown Partners in Canada.

I also found this, which reminds me of the Nokia stuff done by Generator.

Hmm, I think someone at Colenso should raise it with Maddocks. I overheard that a few campaigns that made the original finalist list got the boot subsequently because they'd been done before. I think these campaigns should also be held up to the same test.

Kick 'em both out. No question. I don't care if they were ripped off or it was a coincedence or whatever. It just makes Axis look like shit to have work in there that's been done before.

It's one thing if the ads are just a little similar but these are exactly the same thing.

Sorry fellas.

4:07 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

'Scam Generator'? You had better be referring to Mojo and NOT Generator, who with their Nokia back-lit adshels probably have the best standard-format idea in the finalists list.

5:41 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the word scam was misused. But did you not see what this post is all about. The idea's been done. This one's on a larger scale, but it's been done.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd seen those Nokia backgrounds done before - I even told people when I saw them go up on the street here.

Lot's of deaf ears - how does stuff like that - get into awards?

I mean just on the idea alone - it's not ground breaking. It's not that clever and it is executed like a bucket of shit.

10:55 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is no arguing that both these ad have been done so there should be no argument about what needs to be done. Both campaigns should be removed from Axis. Fair is fair.

1:39 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

The finalists are up on the CB blog with those ads in the list. Embarrassing. Should be fixed ASAP. The Mizuno campaign especially, since it was a scam to begin with. I can't believe it was a finalist in the first place, knowing some of the work that didn't make it.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

what do you mean?

2:28 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

These revelations have been interesting. I can’t help but be impressed with the encyclopaedic knowledge that people have of world advertising. I’d be interested to know if our experts could tell me a little more about the Nokia Photo Messaging “original”. What agency did it? In which country? What awards did it win? Where did it run? if it actually did, because there are a few things about it that suggest it might not be a genuine ad. The role playing/gaming website it’s attached to seems a slightly odd place to showcase such a piece of work. But if someone truly beat us to the idea, well done to them and I hope they get the credit they deserve. Well, I obviously think it’s a good idea.

2:57 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice first-ever entry onto the site, Steve.

Are you going to email Richard Maddox and ask him to take it out of Axis?

2:59 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

good point steve. what is that website the nokia ad was on?

3:10 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

yes there's something dodgy there. it called picture messaging, not photo messaging.

4:25 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Picture messaging is what they call it in the Sates and Canada.

Either way it's still an average idea.

5:08 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hmmm I think Steve has a point... that ad posted doesn't look real. I think someone is trying something on here.

9:25 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would someone mock up a scam to get something booted out of AXIS?

AXIS is a crappy award show anyway - who cares about it.

8:51 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

the nokia stuff is ok, you'd maybe put it in your book but it's not award worthy, not even close.

9:08 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

fair point. so where did the ad come from then?

9:08 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

probably some student had the idea and is bitter that someone did it for real. they should get used to it though. happens all the time.

9:10 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

So obviously your book isn't full of award winners.

9:13 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:51 - I guess you didn't enter anything into axis. Nor will we see you there on the night. Good.

I actually think the Nokia stuff is quite good regardless of who did it first. Let's be honest, hold it up against the majority of outdoor in NZ over the past year and it leaves the rest for dead. And no, I had nothing to do with it.

Why don't all you juniors spend less time pretending to be authorities on advertising and more time becoming authorities on advertising.

9:39 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

The thing that makes the 'original' ad seem apocryphal is this: Picture messaging is the term for the service in North America, and then the end line is an attempt at SE-Asian Chinglish.
If Mr. Original Back-lit background wanted to be consistent he would have either gone for correct English, or described the service/product with whatever loopy term Nokia used in Asian territories.
This ad is a fake, and Steve and Tony's is the OG.
So there.

10:34 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

If that is true 10:34 and someone has gone to those lengths to oust an axis entry, they should literally be banned from the industry.

Personally, I still don't believe anyone would do that but i guess you never know.

Someone ring Nokia.

11:02 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

It does seem a tad extreme. Maybe they were upset by someone at Generator.

11:05 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

What's wrong with the line?

Have fun with where you are.

Seems ok to me, sounds like you're interacting with where you are.

Chill.

11:37 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

It does seem weird that there is only one in the 'campaign.'

Besides if it's that hard to find I dont think it has been copied.

Still, the Golf stuff is not a fake. That is exactly the same idea. That is very bad news I think.

11:41 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Although just because something has been done before doesn't mean it's been copied. People have the same ideas. And with such a tough Ad Police around, it would be suicide to copy. Unfortunate coincidence Ireckon.

11:54 am NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

'Have fun with where you are?' That's as gross a waste of 6 words as I've ever seen in an end line - because 1) it's awkwardly phrased (faux Chingrish as previously suggested?) and ambiguous, and 2) it doesn't get the idea across. The ad is attempting to promote harmless deception in the same way as Steve's, but all the end line says is 'you can interact with the ad and enjoy it (or something)'.
All of which clearly marks it out as a fake.

The simple fact is, how can Axis reward work that has been done before?

12:20 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're not getting it are you - the ad hadn't been done before, someone 'faked' it up and is trying to discredit Generator's idea. As both ads accused are from the same indoor, outdoor campaign section perhaps we should be looking at who would benefit - anyone from Colenso or M&C wanna own up?

1:25 pm NZST

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Faked up, are you taking the piss? I can only suppose it's your first Axis finalist. It's been done before.

Yes, they are. That is the most accurate, salient thing ever said on this blog in the history of ever.
If Axis students got off this blog, they might do some work and stop slutting around with senior suits. Most of them have more money than good ideas, and while this all seems a tad bilious, last year's AUT crop look like geniuses compared to them.
